If your 4Runner won't start even when following the proper procedures, use these quick checks to help narrow down the issue.
Common Causes
- Out of Fuel – Make sure the tank isn’t empty
- Flooded Engine – Try again using correct startup steps (pg. 218)
- Immobilizer Issue – May require dealer assistance (pg. 70)
- Dead Battery – See Jump Starting section (pg. 608)
- Loose Battery Terminals – Inspect and tighten (pg. 535)
- Blown Fuse or Weak Key Battery – Can disrupt ignition system
- Disconnected Battery – Reconnect and attempt to start again
Temporary Emergency Starting Procedure
If nothing else works, Toyota allows a one-time emergency start method:- Set the parking brake
- Shift to “P”
- Turn engine switch to ACC
- Press and hold the engine switch for ~15 seconds while holding the brake pedal
