For all you full-time 4WD owners. Limited and Platinum trims are the only ones that offer full-time four-wheel drive (4WD). Here is an overview of how to use the full-time 4WD.

Understanding H4F, H4L, and L4L Modes

The full-time 4WD system in the 2025 4Runner gives you constant traction with selectable modes to adjust for terrain and traction demands. This system includes H4F, H4L, and L4L settings controlled by the front-wheel drive control switch.

H4F – High-Speed 4WD with Open Center Differential

This is your standard driving mode on dry, paved roads.
Power is split between the front and rear axles, with the center differential allowing for smooth, unrestricted operation on high-traction surfaces.

To engage: Hold down and turn the dial to H4F. This mode provides the best ride quality, fuel economy, and minimal drivetrain wear.

H4L – High-Speed 4WD with Locked Center Differential

Use this mode when extra traction is needed, such as on icy roads, gravel, or light off-road terrain.
The center differential is locked, which forces equal power to front and rear axles, reducing wheel slip.

To engage:
  1. Slow down to under 62 mph
  2. Push and turn the dial to H4L
  3. Confirm the center differential lock indicator is illuminated

L4L – Low-Speed 4WD with Locked Center Differential

This mode provides maximum torque and control for extreme off-road conditions—steep climbs, descents, mud, deep snow, or sand.
Uses lower gear ratios for high torque at low speeds.

To engage:
  1. Stop the vehicle completely
  2. Shift the transmission into Neutral
  3. Push and turn the dial to L4L
  4. Confirm the 4LO and center differential lock indicators are on

Shifting Guidelines

  • H4F to H4L: Can be done while driving under 62 mph
  • H4L to L4L (or L4L to H4L): Vehicle must be stopped with the transmission in Neutral
  • If indicator lights flash during shifting, the mode may not have engaged. Try slowly driving forward or in reverse to complete the shift.

Additional Notes

When in L4L, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is automatically disabled.
Rapid flashing of the 4LO or center diff lock indicators may indicate a system error. If so, consult your dealer.
Shifting may be restricted at very low temperatures if transmission fluid is cold.
