Brake fluid is a critical part of your 4Runner’s braking system. Over time, it can absorb moisture from the air, reducing braking effectiveness and increasing the risk of brake fade—especially under heavy use.

Recommended Brake Fluid Type

Toyota recommends the following fluid types:
Use only newly opened brake fluid containers, as fluid can absorb moisture once exposed to air.

Brake Fluid Inspection Schedule

  • Check the fluid level regularly, especially before long trips or off-road use
  • Toyota recommends replacing the brake fluid every 2 years, regardless of mileage
  • For severe-duty driving (frequent towing, mountain descents, or dusty/dirty environments), inspect more frequently

How to Check the Fluid Level

  1. Locate the brake fluid reservoir on the driver side of the engine bay
  2. Check that fluid is between the “MAX” and “MIN” lines on the tank
  3. Do not overfill; if low, add fluid slowly and carefully
  4. Always use a clean funnel dedicated only to brake fluid

Safety Notes

  • Brake fluid is corrosive to paint and harmful to skin and eyes—wear gloves and wipe any spills immediately
  • Overfilled or low levels may indicate pad wear or leaks
  • If frequent refills are needed, consult your dealer for inspection
  • Always ensure the reservoir cap is secure after checking or adding fluid
