Toyota’s part-time 4WD system is designed to optimize traction across a wide range of road and trail conditions. Below is a breakdown of the three drive modes, their intended use, and how to shift between them safely.

2H – Two-Wheel Drive High​

Use this mode for everyday driving on dry, paved roads.
Drive power is sent to the rear wheels only.
This mode offers the best fuel efficiency and the least drivetrain wear.

To engage: Turn the 4WD control switch to “2H” while driving under 62 mph.

4H – Four-Wheel Drive High​

Ideal for light off-roading or driving on snow, ice, or gravel.
Delivers power to all four wheels for improved traction.
Maintains higher speed capability compared to low range.

To engage:

1. Slow down to below 62 mph
2. Turn the control switch to “4H”
3. Wait for the 4HI indicator to illuminate

4L – Four-Wheel Drive Low​

Used in low-speed, high-torque scenarios like deep snow, steep hills, mud, or rock crawling.
Engages all four wheels with low-range gearing for maximum traction and control.

To engage:

1. Stop the vehicle completely
2. Shift the transmission to Neutral
3. Press and turn the control switch to “4L”
4. Confirm that the 4LO indicator is illuminated

Shifting Guidelines​

• 2H to 4H or 4H to 2H: Can be done while driving under 62 mph
• 4H to 4L or 4L to 4H: Vehicle must be stopped and in Neutral

Additional Notes​

• If the 4HI or 4LO indicator is flashing, the shift has not completed. Driving forward or backward slowly may help engage the mode.
• Avoid attempting to shift between modes while the wheels are slipping.
• When 4L is active, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is automatically disabled.
• Always verify the shift is complete before turning off the engine or leaving the vehicle.
