When preparing your 2025 4Runner for snow and ice, Toyota provides clear guidelines on winter tire use, tire chains, and cold weather driving precautions. Here's what you need to know before hitting snow-covered roads.

Recommended Setup for Winter Driving

Toyota recommends either of the following:
  • Install four snow tires of the same brand and size
  • Use tire chains on the rear tires only (if compatible with your tire size)
  • Tire chains cannot be mounted on 265/70R18 tires due to limited clearance between tire and suspension/body.

Driving With Snow Tires

  • All four tires must be snow-rated and of matching type/size
  • Maintain correct inflation pressure
  • Do not exceed 75 mph (120 km/h), regardless of tire type
  • Avoid mixing tread patterns or brands, especially on 4WD models

Driving With Tire Chains

  • Only vehicles without 265/70R18 tires may use chains
  • Chains must be installed on the rear tires only
  • Drive no faster than 30 mph (50 km/h)
  • Avoid abrupt steering, sudden braking, or downshifting
  • After installing, retighten chains after driving ¼–½ mile
  • Chain sizes must match your tire spec. Reference the manual for approved dimensions

Chain Dimensions (Toyota Recommendations)

For compatible tires:
  • Side Chain: 0.20 in. dia × 0.71 in. wide × 1.81 in. long
  • Cross Chain: 0.25 in. dia × 0.89 in. wide × 1.50 in. long

Additional Tips for Cold Weather Prep

  • Inspect your battery and coolant
  • Use winter-rated washer fluid
  • Clear snow from roof, lights, vents, brakes, and sensors
  • Turn off the automatic parking brake mode to prevent freeze-lock
  • Don’t engage Brake Hold or Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) in icy conditions
