What Oil to Use on the 6th Generation 4Runner, How Much, and When to Check It

Maintaining proper engine oil levels and using the correct type of oil is critical for engine performance and longevity - especially with the turbocharged T24A-FTS engine found in the 2025 4Runner. There will always be people who swear by different methods, different products, specific brands and the list goes on.

Recommended Oil Type

Toyota recommends Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent that meets the following criteria:
  • Oil Grade: ILSAC GF-6A
  • Viscosity: SAE 0W-20
  • SAE 0W-20 offers ideal performance for fuel economy, engine protection, and cold-start reliability
If 0W-20 is unavailable in a pinch, SAE 5W-20 may be used temporarily but must be replaced with 0W-20 at the next oil change.

Oil Capacity

Oil capacity depends on whether or not the oil filter is replaced during the change:
  • With Filter: 5.9 qt. (5.6 L)
  • Without Filter: 5.6 qt. (5.3 L)
Always warm up the engine and wait about 8 minutes before checking the dipstick. Oil level should fall between the low and upper refill marks.

Oil Change Notes

  • After changing the oil, reset the maintenance data in the multi-information display
  • Overfilling or using the wrong viscosity can damage the engine
  • If you frequently tow, idle for long periods, or drive short distances in cold weather, check your oil more often
