Understanding your 2025 Toyota 4Runner’s fuel type and tank capacity is essential for ensuring proper maintenance and performance. This section covers the fuel requirements, tank capacity, and tips for maintaining optimal fuel efficiency.

Fuel Type

You must only use unleaded gasoline. Select octane rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher. Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 87 may result in engine knocking. Persistent knocking can lead to engine damage.

Alternative Fuels: The vehicle is not designed to run on ethanol-based fuels (e.g., E85) or other non-recommended fuel types. Always ensure you’re using the correct fuel to avoid engine damage and ensure proper vehicle operation.

Tank Capacity

The 2025 4Runner has a fuel tank capacity of approximately 19.0 gallons (72 liters). This capacity provides a good range for long-distance driving and off-road adventures.
  • Fuel Tank Capacity: 19.0 gal. (72.0 L, 15.8 Imp.gal.)

Fuel Efficiency Tips

To maximize fuel efficiency and get the most out of each tank, here are a few tips:
  1. Drive Smoothly:
Avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking to maintain optimal fuel economy. Smooth driving helps improve gas mileage and reduces wear on the engine.
  2. Regular Maintenance:
Keep your 4Runner well-maintained by following the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, air filter replacements, and tire rotations. A well-maintained vehicle is more fuel-efficient.
  3. Check Tire Pressure:
Ensure your tires are properly inflated to the recommended pressure. Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance and reduce fuel efficiency.
  4. Use Cruise Control on Highways:
When driving on highways, use cruise control to maintain a constant speed, which can help improve fuel efficiency.
  5. Avoid Excess Weight:
Extra weight, especially in the trunk or roof rack, can decrease fuel economy. Remove unnecessary items when not in use.

Why does the information linked owners manual differ from what is posted here? The manual only recommends 87 or higher, not the premium gas required specified in this posting. Why the difference? Thanks for clarifying.

It also says 23 gal fuel tank capacity, think it's only 19. Weird.

Updated both of these sections.

Why does it still say both sizes?

Select octane rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher.
For Americans who are still wondering, this sentence translates to "use 87 octane or higher in the U.S."
