What Does The J Mean?

The “J” in 17 × 7J refers to the wheel bead seat profile—specifically, the shape of the inner lip of the wheel where the tire bead sits.
  • 17 = Wheel diameter in inches
  • 7 = Wheel width in inches (measured inside the bead seat)
  • J = Bead seat design / flange shape
  • The letter “J” is the most common flange profile for passenger vehicles and light trucks (including Toyota 4Runners).
  • It defines how the inner lip is shaped to hold the tire bead.
  • Other letters like “JJ,” “K,” or “H” exist, but “J” is standard for off-road and SUV wheels.
You don’t really need to worry about it unless you’re trying to mount tires on non-standard rims or doing something niche with fitment. For normal off-road builds or tire upgrades, just know that “J” is correct and compatible with typical all-terrain and mud-terrain tires.

The OEM wheel on 2025 TRD ORP is +55mm offset. If I put the 2025 TRD Pro wheel with 20mm offset on this vehicle, I assume it will fit OK with OEM sized tires (265/70R18)? Both wheels are same width; only difference is less offset.

Hoo boy, now I'm really confused. I've been looking at wheel specs on different sites and they're all over the place for the same TRD Pro wheel. For example:
  • OEMPartsOnline says 2025 Toyota TRD Pro 18-in wheels are 8-in wide with +45mm offset; a dealer's site agrees, showing the identical page
  • Rave Offroad says these wheels are 8.5-in wide with +20mm offset
  • The original post (above) says these are 7.5-in wide without specifying offset, while another 6G forum agrees on width and offset is +20mm
  • Amazon lists OEM wheels as 8.5-in wide with +20mm offset, agreeing with Rave Offroad
  • A post with pictures on another forum agrees with Amazon and Rave Offroad
So I'm guessing that the real specs are: 8.5-in wide with +20mm offset. How can it be this confusing?

@sscarter - yeah, the TRD Pro wheels are a much more aggressive offset with +20mm, while most of the other trims like the TRD OR and Sport are +55mm offset.

Here are a few shots of the markings on the inside of my TRD OR wheels showing +55mm offset:

Usually, anything below a 0mm offset is going to be way too aggressive. The trailhunters and pros are on a +25 offset. Other models (TRD Offroad, Sport, Limited, etc. all have all+55mm offset. If you want more stance/poke, you’ll need a smaller tire or to remove mudflaps, crash plates, and pin the fender well back. I've seen the 285/70/18 Nitto Ridge grapplers (33.9") tire fit with no lift or rub, but on a stock offset of +25. These 4Runners are really designed around a max of +25mm offset with 285/70/18 tires. If you want to go with a 17" tire, then look at a 285/75/17 with +25mm wheels and you will be fine.
