A flat tire on the trail or highway can catch anyone off guard. The 2025 4Runner is equipped with a full-size spare and includes everything you need to safely perform a tire swap if needed. Here's how to get the job done safely and correctly.

What You’ll Need

Your 4Runner comes with a tool bag, scissor jack, and spare tire. These are located under the rear cargo floor.
  • Jack handle extension
  • Lug wrench
  • Jack
  • Spare tire (full-size or compact depending on trim)
Note: Locations vary slightly depending on whether your 4Runner is equipped with third-row seating.

Jacking Points

Always position the jack on firm, level ground and align it with the designated jacking points on the frame.
  • Front: Use the notch behind the front wheels
  • Rear: Position the jack under the axle housing, aligning the jack head groove with the axle shape
Do not get under the vehicle while it’s jacked up. Use wheel chocks on the opposite side before lifting.

Tire Chocking Reference

  • Front Left Flat: Chock rear right
  • Front Right Flat: Chock rear left
  • Rear Left Flat: Chock front right
  • Rear Right Flat: Chock front left

Spare Tire Drop & Storage

  1. Assemble the jack handle extension
  2. Open the access panel to reach the lowering screw
  3. Insert the extension and rotate counterclockwise to lower the tire
  4. Once fully lowered, remove the holding bracket from the center hub
  5. After installation, re-secure the flat tire using the bracket and crank it back up evenly to avoid rattle or loosening

Safety Tips

  • Never exceed 50 mph if using a compact spare
  • Replace compact spares with a full-size tire as soon as possible
  • Avoid sudden acceleration, downshifts, or sharp steering while using the spare
  • Do not drive with a flat—doing so may damage the wheel and suspension components

Torque Specs

  • Steel Wheels: 154 ft•lbf (209 N•m)
  • Aluminum Wheels: 97 ft•lbf (131 N•m)
  • Re-torque your lugs within 100 miles after installation
