There is always a large debate on Recommended Maintenance Intervals. Always. It's probably one of the most debated topics in automotive history. Let's be clear here, though. The more often you service your vehicle, the more likely it is to perform better in the long run. Without anymore introduction, let's see what the owner's manual suggests for general maintenance intervals on the 6th Gen 4Runner.

Proper vehicle maintenance is key to long-term performance and reliability. Toyota outlines both general and scheduled maintenance to ensure your 4Runner runs smoothly for years to come.

Scheduled Maintenance Overview

Scheduled maintenance refers to service performed at specific mileage or time intervals. These include oil changes, filter replacements, brake inspections, and fluid level checks.

Toyota provides the full maintenance schedule in the Scheduled Maintenance Guide or Owner’s Manual Supplement, but here are some key recommendations:
  • Engine Oil & Filter: Every 5,000–10,000 miles depending on driving conditions
  • Tire Rotation: Every 5,000 miles
  • Brake Inspection: Every 5,000–10,000 miles
  • Cabin Air Filter: Check every 15,000 miles
  • Engine Air Filter: Check every 15,000 miles
  • Coolant Level & Condition: Inspect at regular intervals
  • Spark Plugs, Differential Fluid, and Transmission Fluid: Refer to detailed schedule
The multi-information display will notify you when service is due. After maintenance is completed, use the system menu to reset the maintenance reminder.

General Maintenance

These are day-to-day or periodic checks that can be done by the owner:
  • Engine Oil Level (pg. 531)
  • Coolant Level (pg. 533)
  • Brake Fluid (pg. 535)
  • Battery Terminals (pg. 535)
  • Tire Pressure (pg. 553)
  • Windshield Washer Fluid (pg. 538)
  • Exterior Lights & Indicators
  • Seat Belts & Head Restraints
  • Steering & Pedal Feel
  • Fluid Leaks
Toyota recommends checking these items regularly—especially before long trips or off-road use.

Resetting the Maintenance Reminder

After completing required maintenance, reset the “Maintenance Required” message via the multi-information display:

7-inch display:
  1. Use the meter control switch to go to “Vehicle Settings”
  2. Select “Scheduled Maintenance” → “Yes”
12.3-inch display:
  1. Press and hold to display cursor
  2. Navigate to “Settings” → “Vehicle Settings” → “Scheduled Maintenance” → “Yes”
