The climate control system in the 2025 4Runner offers automatic and manual operation for regulating interior temperature, fan speed, airflow direction, and defogging. Whether you have a single-zone or dual-zone system, understanding the controls will help you optimize comfort and visibility in all weather conditions.
Refer to pages 454–460 of the Owner’s Manual for HVAC control panel layout, airflow diagrams, and auto/manual function behavior.

Basic HVAC Controls
- AUTO Mode: Automatically adjusts fan speed, air distribution, and A/C based on the set temperature
- OFF: Shuts off the entire HVAC system
- A/C Button: Turns the air conditioning compressor on/off
- DUAL Mode: Allows separate temperature control for driver and passenger
- SYNC: Links passenger temperature to driver setting (if equipped)
Airflow Mode Options
- Face: Air blows from the dashboard vents
- Bi-Level: Air blows from both dashboard and floor vents
- Floor: Air directed primarily to the footwells
- Defrost + Floor: Air to footwells and windshield
- Windshield Only (MAX DEFROST): Prioritizes window clearing
Recirculation vs. Fresh Air
- Recirculation Mode: Recycles cabin air for quicker cooling
- Outside Air Mode: Brings in fresh air from outside
Use recirculation to quickly cool the cabin, but switch back to fresh air to reduce window fogging or during extended use.
Defogging and Defrosting
- Front Defrost (windshield icon): Activates blower and A/C to clear fog
- Rear Defrost: Clears rear window and side mirror heaters
For faster window clearing, raise blower speed and set temp to warm. Avoid recirculation mode during defogging.
Climate Tips
- In AUTO mode, manual adjustments (fan, mode) will cancel full auto but retain temp control
- Use A/C regularly to help maintain system seals
- Clean cabin air filter regularly for best airflow and performance
