If Apple CarPlay was working before but suddenly stopped—especially if your phone is showing as “Use For Phone” or “Use For Media”—you’ll need to manually reconnect it. This can happen if the system doesn’t default to Apple CarPlay and instead connects your iPhone as a basic Bluetooth device. Here’s how to fix it.
Steps to Reconnect Apple CarPlay
1. Tap the gear icon in the lower-left corner of the main multimedia screen2. Select Bluetooth & Devices
3. Tap your iPhone from the list (or add it if it’s not shown)
Toggle Apple CarPlay ON: This will disconnect the “Phone” or “Media” profile and replace it with CarPlay
The Apple CarPlay icon will now appear in the top left of the main screen
Tap the icon to launch Apple CarPlay
Pro Tip
If CarPlay keeps getting overridden by Bluetooth phone or media profiles, make sure your phone is set to auto-join the 4Runner Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is active.Refer to pages 123–126 in the multimedia manual for Apple CarPlay connection and reconnection instructions, including how to manage registered devices and toggle functionality.
