The 2025 4Runner offers various key types to enhance convenience and security. Each key has unique functions designed to provide easy access to your vehicle, as well as features that improve your overall ownership experience. Here’s a breakdown of the key types and their functions.

Key Types

  1. Smart Key System
The 2025 4Runner comes equipped with the Smart Key System, which allows for keyless entry and push-button start. This system lets you unlock and start the vehicle without removing the key fob from your pocket or bag.
    • Keyless Entry: As long as the key fob is within range, you can unlock the doors by simply pulling the door handle.
    • Push-Button Start: To start the vehicle, simply press the brake pedal and push the engine start/stop button while the key fob is inside the vehicle.
  2. Mechanical Key
The Mechanical Key is a traditional key used for manual operation. It is hidden inside the smart key fob and can be accessed by removing the cover. This key can be used to unlock the door manually in case the battery in the smart key fob is dead or in situations where the system is not working properly.
    • Battery Backup: The mechanical key is a useful backup when the electronic system is unavailable.
  3. Valet Key
The Valet Key is a special key that can be used when handing the vehicle over to a valet or another person who needs to drive the car but should not have access to the vehicle’s trunk or glove box.
    • Limited Access: The valet key provides access to the car’s basic functions but restricts access to areas like the glove box and the trunk.

Key Functions

  1. Remote Lock/Unlock
The smart key fob allows you to lock and unlock the doors remotely, as well as activate the vehicle's alarm system. Simply press the lock/unlock button on the key fob to control the doors from a distance.
  2. Remote Start
In some trims, the 2025 4Runner features remote engine start. With the key fob, you can start the engine remotely, allowing the vehicle to cool down or warm up before entering.
  3. Trunk Release
The smart key fob can also be used to remotely release the trunk or liftgate, making it easier to load or unload cargo without needing to physically unlock the vehicle.
  4. Proximity Sensing
The Proximity Sensing feature in the Smart Key System detects when the key fob is within range, enabling automatic unlocking of the doors as you approach. Similarly, the doors will automatically lock when you walk away, enhancing convenience and security.
  5. Keyless Entry with Panic Button
The fob includes a panic button that can be pressed to activate the vehicle’s horn and lights in case of an emergency, helping to draw attention to your location.
