2025+ 6th Gen 4Runner: Hybrid vs. Non-Hybrid – Quick Comparison

6thGen4Runner_Hybrid_Test_07.jpg

I recently drove both the standard 2.4L Turbo and the i-FORCE MAX Hybrid 4Runner back-to-back. After testing, I chose the hybrid. Here’s a quick breakdown if you're deciding between the two:
  • Power and Driving Feel:
Both models are a huge upgrade over the 5th Gen 4Runner. But the hybrid takes it even further — way faster off the line, snappier shifting, and more aggressive in Sport Mode. There's no lag between gears like there is on the non-hybrid.
  • Specs:
The i-FORCE MAX hybrid adds 48 more horsepower and 148 lb-ft more torque than the standard turbo. It’s heavier, but it feels faster — especially during freeway merging and passing.
  • Fuel Economy:
Slightly better in the hybrid for city driving (thanks to electric assist), but both are pretty similar on the highway.
  • Daily Driving:
The hybrid feels smoother and more responsive around town. Low-speed crawling, stop-and-go traffic, and general driving all feel more refined.
  • Off-Road Notes:
Both hybrid and non-hybrid models keep the traditional 4WD transfer case with low range. The hybrid just adds a little extra electric boost off the line without changing off-road fundamentals.
  • Cargo Area Difference:
The hybrid has a slightly raised cargo floor (because of the battery) and no option for a third-row seat.

Thanks for the write up! Basically everything I’ve heard, the hybrid is the way to go if you can get your hands on one. You’re spot on with what everyone else is saying. I want the hybrid for more horsepower really. Maybe at 100k miles, I’ll change my tune, but we’ll see. I can’t wait to get this thing off road, hopefully I get to pick mine up next week.
