2025+ 6th Gen 4Runner: Hybrid vs. Non-Hybrid – Quick Comparison
I recently drove both the standard 2.4L Turbo and the i-FORCE MAX Hybrid 4Runner back-to-back. After testing, I chose the hybrid. Here’s a quick breakdown if you're deciding between the two:
- Power and Driving Feel:
Both models are a huge upgrade over the 5th Gen 4Runner. But the hybrid takes it even further — way faster off the line, snappier shifting, and more aggressive in Sport Mode. There's no lag between gears like there is on the non-hybrid. - Specs:
The i-FORCE MAX hybrid adds 48 more horsepower and 148 lb-ft more torque than the standard turbo. It’s heavier, but it feels faster — especially during freeway merging and passing. - Fuel Economy:
Slightly better in the hybrid for city driving (thanks to electric assist), but both are pretty similar on the highway. - Daily Driving:
The hybrid feels smoother and more responsive around town. Low-speed crawling, stop-and-go traffic, and general driving all feel more refined. - Off-Road Notes:
Both hybrid and non-hybrid models keep the traditional 4WD transfer case with low range. The hybrid just adds a little extra electric boost off the line without changing off-road fundamentals. - Cargo Area Difference:
The hybrid has a slightly raised cargo floor (because of the battery) and no option for a third-row seat.
