The Top 7 Skid Plates Options for the 2025+ 4Runner, Different Options for Materials, Coverage, and More.

I’ve been digging into all the skid plates for the new 6th Gen 4Runner since the factory protection leaves a lot exposed. One solid hit on the trail can take out your oil pan, transmission, or fuel tank, and that’s not something I want to deal with. A lot of companies already have kits out, so here are the main ones I’ve found worth looking into.

Things to Note

When shopping for skid plates, coverage and material are the two biggest things to keep in mind. Aluminum is lighter and resists corrosion but won’t take repeated hits as well as steel. Steel is tougher but adds a lot of weight. Some brands sell full systems, while others just offer front or engine coverage.

If you’re running a diff drop, make sure the skid plate you’re looking at is compatible. Some designs won’t clear the dropped differential without spacers.

OEM / Trailhunter & TRD Pro

Toyota didn’t forget about armor on the higher trims. Trailhunter models come with a steel front skid, while TRD Pro gets a lightweight aluminum front skid with the red TRD logo.

• Trailhunter: steel front skid
• TRD Pro: aluminum with TRD logo insert
• Direct factory fitment
• OEM look and finish

Pricing varies by dealer

Final thoughts

For full coverage, CBI and RCI are the heavy-hitters, while NYTOP gives you a lighter modular aluminum setup. Victory and DV8 give solid steel options with multiple coverage points, and OEM skids on Trailhunter and TRD Pro trims are a good starting point if you already have them. It mostly comes down to what fits your 4Runner build and your plans with other mods. I personally am going to go with an aluminum front skid plate since I don't need anything crazy.
