Finally got around to taking some measurements on the 6th Gen today.
Some of the most important were the spline counts on the front CV stub shaft and the rear axle shafts.
2025 TRD ORP
Front CV STUB SHAFT diameter: 27.74mm
Rear Axle Shaft Diameter: 35.08mm
One really annoying part about pulling the hubs and shafts out from the rear is that the brake link bracket is connected to the hub so if you want to remove the hub shaft assembly you also have to remove the brake line. It’s easy to disconnect, pull the shaft and reconnect but requires a brake bleed at the end of the day. Pretty annoying.
Rear axle shaft length (from flange mounting surface): 29 13/16”
Removing the tie rods have changed a bit. Since you can’t knock the side of the outer tie rod mount with a hammer anymore, because the spindles are aluminum, this was the workaround. Just flip the nut upside down and use a rubber mallet to hammer the tie rod joint down and out. Not ideal because it causes stress on the joint, but it works.
Another interesting fact is that the Tacoma CV axles are bigger on the inner joint and have bigger axle shafts than the 4Runner… it seems like all trims and all models. Doesn’t matter, Tacoma just has bigger CV joints and shafts than the 4Runner. The 4Runner is limited in travel because of the CV joints. From what I’ve heard, ICON VEHICLE DYNAMICS tested the travel on the 4Runner vs. Tacoma with the same kit and the 4Runnner CV was binding an entire ~3” before the Tacoma CV joints. That said, there is going to be a huge market for aftermarket CV AXLES on the 6th Gen 4Runner. I’ll make another thread on this one later.
We know that Longfield (TrailGear) makes a 250 Land Cruiser upgrade which is essentially a TACOMA CV axle (35 spline inners and 30 spline outers). The 250 should be running the same front diff and same bearing pack so in theory, the Longfield IFS Axle Set for 2024+ Toyota Land Cruiser LC250 should work on the 6th Gen 4Runner as a pretty stout upgrade for those who are curious.
